Ranty Nerd Moment...Look Away...Dear God, Look Away...

Dear Oscars,

It's recently come to my attention that you chose not to nominate Star Trek for a best picture award, despite expanding the number of nomination slots in order to attract more attention and ratings for the televised awards ceremony.

Let me make myself clear: I certainly would never expect Star Trek to actually win an Oscar for Best Picture, but I figured since you expanded the nomination slots for more films, you would at least throw a nod to Star Trek given its accomplishments as a film that combined good storytelling, acting, and cool special effects into a cohesive and balanced film that enthralled both regular movie audiences and film critics alike and revived a practically dead, thirty-year-old movie franchise.

A nomination would have been nice. It would have been considerate. It would have been the least you could do for such an accomplished film.

I mean, there's TEN WHOLE SLOTS to be filled. Surely it could fit in there somewhere?

Apparently not.

To that, I have nothing but this to say to you:

Go fuck yourselves
,
you stuck-up, self-entitled, pseudo film artist snobs.

Every year your televised awards ceremony loses ratings and wonder why? THIS IS WHY.

Your bullshit politics have outweighed your sense of good taste, made your awards ridiculously overrated, and the awards ceremony reduced to nothing more than a TV ratings-vampire.

I used to love watching the Oscars, but as the years have passed, the ceremony has grown increasingly dull and stuffy, with only a few minutes worth watching out of the three to five hours this ceremony takes up.

You can count me as another one of the millions of people who will NOT watch your five hour-long bullshit this year.

Thank You.

P.S., This anger isn't just stemming from the Star Trek snub, but from several years of watching the Oscars in frustration. "Crash" over "Brokeback Mountain"? Fuck You and Goodnight.

Oh, the Things You Will Blog

So Many Things To Blog About, as I haven't blogged in awhile.

Politics:

Why, no, I didn't watch Obama's state of the union address. I think if Obama hadn't given so many freaking speeches earlier in his first year, I might care more; however, that is not the case, and it's a personal frustration for me when I actually loose work hours because of his press conferences and speeches. That's right, kids: when you work for a TV news affiliate and the president holds a special press conference right before dinnertime, local news gets canceled and my hours get cut. Now, granted, this is the State of the Union, a requirement of every president to present every year...but after so much saturation of Obama's extra-special press conferences and speeches and addresses to Congress...

I Just. Don't. Care.

I'm still rooting for the guy, I'm just tired of his face for now.

The Late Night War:

Conan is funnier than Leno. NBC is stupid.

I do respect Leno, however; the man is an icon of American television, one for the TV museums and history books. Nonetheless, everything has it's time. Jay Leno has had his time, just like Johnny Carson before him. Between the two, if there's anybody NBC should have paid millions to go away it should have been Leno, not Conan. I'm definitely interested in watching Oprah's interview with Leno tomorrow, before I make a final judgment on Leno and his role in this epic war.

As for my final thoughts on Conan? Leno may have his show, but Conan has so much more. I watched his final episode on Friday, and the way he bowed out was so graceful, humble, and funny that I felt joyous just watching it. Conan, whatever his plans are, will triumph over this and most likely ultimately blow everyone else out of the water. I truly feel Conan won, and NBC & Leno lost. They're going to regret this so hard.

Also, I felt that his finale words about cynicism were truly inspirational. A look:

Finally, Me:

I'm moving from Ashland to Talent. I'm almost finished, but I feel a great sadness in knowing that I have TOO MUCH CRAP!

I need to purge.

This is kind of a big step for me, because I've been reluctant to get rid of stuff for years.

Especially some of my toys.

My immaturity: it shows.

I have two dolls that I loved and played with, but I haven't touched them in years and they're sitting in a box. I feel guilty having them, but I'm not quite ready to give them away yet. I feel like I need to play with them one last time. So, I've decided that I will have a "good-bye to childhood" tea party with my dolls before I send them to a good home where they will be played with and loved as they were when I first received them. I shared this thought with Tim from ACE Hardware, where I once worked, and he shared a similar idea (with a similar thought process in purging) that he has with his G.I.Joe collection: keep his three favorites, and take pictures of the rest to keep for memories before giving those away.

I think it will feel good to lighten my load and free myself of bits of my past that, while nice to remember, are no longer necessary for my present.

How does Martin Luther King Jr. inspire you?

It's late for me, my eyes are fogging up, so this will be brief.

I remember learning about Dr. King in elementary school.

I remember the passionate way Ms. Long, my 5th grade homeroom teacher would talk about the importance of walking away from a fight and what it meant to the legacy of Dr. King.

Dr. King's ideas of non-violence still resonate with me today. I still get angry, I still get upset, but even when I would face conflicts in middle school, I remembered the importance of non-violent resolution.

I didn't always follow through. I would still occasionally get fed up, reach a breaking point, and shove or hit back; however, every time I did respond violently, it never ended well, which emphasized the importance why it was better to just walk away.

I'm not perfect, but I try. Dr. King wasn't perfect either, but the way in which he changed my country for the better is an ideal way that I think we should all try to follow in our daily lives.

The least we can do is try. I try, out of respect for this man who endured so much, sacrificed so much, so that we could all live in a world free of hate.

TV Snobbery

Is hating stuff like “the Bachelor” snobbish? Or is there legitimate rage to be had here?

Many women that I work with who are in the higher ranks at my workplace, went to college, are independent, career-minded, smart, and they all love “the Bachelor”. I think “the Bachelor” is some serious bullshit, and I feel like the only woman at work who feels this way. I can only judge a book by its cover, however, simply because I refuse to watch it based on its premise – a group of women claw at each other in order to obtain and marry the one perfect man.

I get that it's a guilty pleasure...but still. They have "Bachelor"-watching house parties. I...cannot fathom this.

The most annoying moment I had was when I rolled my eyes at a promo for an upcoming news special on UFO believers, and female co-worker said I shouldn’t judge a book by its cover (Her: “What proof do you have to say that they are wrong?” Me: “I’m not saying they’re wrong, I’m just saying covering stuff like this is pointless and it’s not news”), and then turned around when a promo for District 9 came up said that District 9 was stupid, even though she hadn’t seen it. I really wanted to punch her in the face after that for her blatant, fucking hypocrisy.

I realize everybody has their guilty pleasures, and I understand I can’t always judge a person by what they watch (I can just imagine what people think of me and my sci-fi TV tastes), but I just can’t understand how any of the bright women at my work place can love that stuff at much as they do. These same people think more creative shows like “Pushing Daisies” are “shit”, compared to a (stupid) paranormal cop show on Lifetime, which is considered “brilliant.”

On the other hand, I realize that this is all a matter of taste, and everybody is different. Whether I like it or not, “Pushing Daisies” is the one that got canceled, not “the Bachelor”.

Is this a legitimate sexism/feminism concern? Or am I just a TV snob?

Internet Sich-ee-a-shons

I'm canceling my internet sometime this week because I'm moving.

I'm moving from Ashland to Talent to live with some friends and save some money on rent and commuting.

I'll still blog, but it may be sketchy at best.

Stay tuned.

New Year, New Post, New Look

So, as per usual with my ADD-brain, I'm changing the lay out again. Hope you like it.

With this layout the font is a little bigger and, hopefully, easier to read.

The picture in the title was taken of me when I was in Ireland three years ago.

Internet is still iffy.

I was going to post about how I hate New Year's Eve, but that seems dumb now.

Everything is mostly new. New Place, moving in with some friends to save money, and New Hair.

Same job.

Doing some stuff.

Sorry this isn't an awesome post. My head hurts.
